Hurricane Ike, dumping the landline and working at home
Here in South Florida, all eyes are on Ike. Me, I don’t like Ike. Ike looks scary. We wont know much until the advisory tomorrow. Of course the kids have their fingers crossed that there will be no school until Monday but we will have to wait and see what happens with this one. I think school is a lot better than a hurricane but you know kids! lol
My update for the week:
September 1st came and we were short this month. We don’t have many bills anymore but they are all due on the 1st and the 3rd of the month. So a few things couldn’t get paid. 1 being the CRV and my car insurance. I have never been late on my car insurance. The CRV, I have made 1 payment on since I made the arrangements with Honda but I can’t do it. The Civic is the only bill not due at the beginning of the month and I am so happy they gave me that 2 month extension. My first payment is due the 16th and I will make that one. It is a lot less than the CRV. The insurance will get paid when I get paid next week.
Our $99 Comcast Triple Play deal was set to expire this month for our cable/internet and phone. The price would go up to over $160 so we called to see if they would keep us at $99 or offer us lower prices if we dropped some options. I mean geese-why do you have to pay for a million channels if you only want a few? We get cable because my daughter is a huge Discovery Channel and Animal planet kid otherwise I would get rid of it all together. The internet-we need it for work so that can’t go. So, 5 different calls to 5 different reps-same result: NO DEAL. Can you believe they will only offer the awesome deals to new customers? One rep basically told us to cancel and become a new customer in 6 months. Uh, Hello! So I put in an order to cancel the service and started reviewing our options. We don’t have many where we live-only Comcast or the phone company and dish. Of course, there will be no savings there and more than likely we will need to put down hefty deposits for them because of our horrible credit right now. So, one more call to Comcast got us a little breathing room. Lower the channels, dump the landline and get an “existing customer deal” for the internet-total: $76 plus tax. Not great but not that bad. It is only for 6 months though. By then-maybe we will have more options. We have never been without a landline. Not like we used it a lot anyway. That lately became the “bill collector line” so I wont miss it.
My last update is about my whole making extra money topic. I have spent the last few days looking deeply into this. I have been reading so many blogs on how people are making money blogging, doing paid reviews and doing things I have already started doing like surveys and mystery shopping. In the past few months, I have made a few bucks here and there doing these things. I want to write about it and share my ideas, links and such. When I started this blog, I did it with one intent and that was to keep a log of my “getting out of debt journey” . I chose not to keep it private because maybe someone would gain some kind of knowledge from my experiences and I also wanted to get feedback on my actions. I never intended to make big money on it. Now that I see the opportunities out there are endless as far as paid reviews and helping others make money by posting links and ideas, I am stuck. Why? Because I am on a free WordPress blog that allows none of that really. I love WordPress because it is free and so easy to use but I am limited. So, I am not sure what to do. Keep this blog just for my debt journey and start a new one somewhere that allows me to post links for all my other ideas? Or keep one big blog combining this one with all my ideas somewhere else and delete this one? See what I mean? Confusing. I have looked into just doing it on my own but then you need to pay for hosting and all that and even at the low rates, I can’t afford anything extra right now. Any suggestions?
