Understanding Medicare Enrollment Periods: AEP vs. OEP

Medicare provides health coverage to millions, but understanding its rules and enrollment periods can be challenging. Two key times to review and adjust coverage are the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP). While often confused, they serve different purposes.

The Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP)

The Annual Election Period (AEP) runs from October 15 to December 7 and is open to all Medicare beneficiaries.

During AEP, you can:✔ Switch from Original Medicare to Medicare AdvantageChange Medicare Advantage plansReturn to Original Medicare and add a Part D planChange your Part D plan

Medicare plans change yearly—provider networks, premiums, and drug coverage shift. Reviewing your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) ensures your plan still fits your needs.

Many assume their current plan is still the best, potentially missing out on better coverage or savings. Comparing options during AEP can make a big difference in your healthcare and budget.

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs from January 1 to March 31 and is only for those already in a Medicare Advantage plan.

During OEP, you can:

Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan

Return to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan

However, you cannot:

Enroll in Medicare Advantage if you only have Original Medicare

Change a standalone Part D plan (unless leaving a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage)

OEP provides a second chance to adjust coverage early in the year—helpful if your plan isn’t meeting expectations due to costs, provider networks, or coverage changes.
